Intro

The Charlotte Coastal Region is steeped in history dating back to 1604 when French explorers Samuel de Champlain, Pierre Dugua and Sieur de Mons landed on St. Croix Island (known to the locals as Dochet Island) over 400 years ago. In fact, St. Croix Island was the first European settlement north of Florida. In 1991, the St. Croix River was designated a heritage river by the Government of Canada.

The Charlotte Coastal Region is truly a “Loyalist” group of communities - having served as a settlement for the United Empire Loyalists who arrived following the American War of Independence. Historical reminders of Loyalist tradition and heritage can be found throughout the region. These include sites of interest and buildings of architectural importance that can be viewed as part of a leisure walk or as part of one of the historical walking tours offered. One of the best examples of the colonial heritage in North America is found in St. Andrews. St. Andrews is a National Historic District and is Canada’s oldest seaside resort town.
