Medical and Health   Gareth Smith, Pharmacist, St. Andrews & Campobello The Charlotte County Hospital is located in St. Stephen and serves the Charlotte Coastal Region in conjunction with health centers located in the communities. A 44-bed acute care hospital operated by the Atlantic Health Sciences Centre, the Charlotte County Hospital provides 24-hour emergency care, concentrated care and ambulatory care. The hospital is staffed by 20 medical staff members including general practitioners, surgeons, radiologists, dentists and specialists. The medical staff are supported by 25 medical specialists from outside the community who provide clinics and consultation services on a regular basis. The Atlantic Health Science Centre, located in Saint John about one hour and fifteen minutes from St. Stephen, is the largest medical centre in New Brunswick and provides a full range of medical services. The Charlotte County Hospital is supported in the eastern Charlotte Coastal Region by the Fundy Health Centre, located on the same premises as the Fundy Nursing Home in Blacks Harbour. This facility provides daily twelve-hour emergency care and primary health care for the communities of Blacks Harbour, St. George and the surrounding areas. The facility has four 48-hour observation beds. The facility is used by the three doctors based in St. George and is staffed by two nurse practitioners, and provides basic diagnostic and rehabilitation services on site. Visiting specialists and other health professionals provide clinics on a regular basis. Grand Manan Island has a modern twelve-bed hospital and three doctors serving the community. The hospital delivers 24-hour emergency care, ambulance transfer and family medicine. Grand Manan residents benefit from leading edge teleradiology services offered in conjunction with the radiology department of the Atlantic Health Sciences Centre in Saint John. Emergency air ambulance service is provided between Grand Manan and Saint John by a private charter air service based on Grand Manan. The St. Andrews Health Centre has three physicians, two dentists, a physiotherapist and a dietician. St. Andrews residents requiring in-patient care are served by the Charlotte County Hospital in St. Stephen, about a 20-minute drive, or the Atlantic Health Sciences Centre in Saint John. There are a number of nursing homes found throughout the Charlotte Coastal Region. St. Andrews has a 60-bed nursing home located in the town. St. Stephen has a number of nursing homes located in the community and there are nursing homes found in Blacks Harbour and on Grand Manan. |
